I’m involved in this programme run by my college and Google, or more specifically, Women Entrepreneurs on the Web. It’s quite a lovely project where we college students are paired up with local businesses run by women from various industries, and Google provides us training on Google+ tools and we use those skills to help the businesses set up or improve their online presence. It’s been fantastic so far. Our trainings are conducted at the local Google office, and the first time I set foot inside, I was the epitome of giggly fangirl. I can’t deny that half the reason I’m involved in this project is because it is related to Google, and if that someone helps me end up there one day, that would be very nice. Nevertheless, what you see above is just one little area of their office which has astroturf and bright yellow and green doors. It’s a lovely feel.
Since our training session was in the morning, they provided us with breakfast, and this was my breakfast. Coffee from Spinelli, and a little blueberry baked goodness from Cedele Bakery. This was very satisfying.
Can you believe their rooms are named after fonts? We were in Verdana if I’m not mistaken, but the next room was Comic Sans and I found it hilarious. I asked the lady in charge of us students about why the rooms were named after fonts, and she said it seemed like the best way to remember meeting rooms easily. In response, I asked her if people make fun of meetings held in Comic Sans, or if they dread them, and she just laughed at me. Gotta love the Comic Sans jokes. I’m still not too sure why the search bar says “Fast is better than slow” since it has nothing to really….do with anything, or so it seems, but hey, at this point, personally speaking, Google can do no wrong.
After the training session, our in-charge lady wanted to speak to us students in general about how we’re finding the program, and so on. This was done over lunch, and again, having heard so much about the Google lunches, I was pretty much squirming with excitement to see what they had. They also clearly have prettily decorated chalkboards welcoming you to eat. Angry Birrrrrrds.
It’s a nice school-like system where you pick up your cutlery and a tray from one end, and then take your food as you go along. It’s a system that works, I guess. I liked the decor in the cutlery area. They’ve clearly put effort into making it look nice!
This is the worst photograph anyone could take with a phone camera, considering my proximity to this chart when I took the photo, but that’s not the point. The point is, Google clearly has the best food labelling system I have ever seen. Bless their souls for just simply labelling their food properly. That’s all we ask for!!
It’s also an open kitchen, so you can see just how insanely busy these people in the kitchen are! It’s always kind of fun to see what happens in the kitchen even though sometimes I’ll agree you’re better off not knowing.
So after all that lovely build-up, here’s the main point of this entry. Is the food at Google as good as everyone says it is? Is it as cool an office as people say it is? Well, I’ll have to say it is, actually. Their menu is actually really amazing, and I might not really know what to eat if I was there every single day. I decided to go light on lunch and made myself a lovely salad at the salad bar, and then figured since I’m eating salad, I’ll get myself dessert and got myself that super lovely cake (someone just placed it at the dessert table as I was putting my salad together) and added a half dozen strawberries to that. It was a glorious lunch. That salad was a mix of tomatoes, avocado, olives, cranberries, cheese slices(they have a whole selection of cheeses!) and balsamic dressing. Trust me….it somehow worked pretty decently together.
Oh Google, you have me googly-eyed.
